internet and the RV

I just picked up my first RV :-)

it's a 1986 Ford and I'm wondering how one set's up internet on the move..

I would love to hear what folks here are using.

First question is can I run the laptop off the plug in the rig (talk to me like I'm 5 this is all new to me)
Do I have to have the generator running to do that?

I'm assuming If I'm docked to house electric it's the right power supply.. ordo I need some kind of filter or transformer??

Is there a better way to do this??
some kind of larger computer battery pack as the battery in the laptop only works for about 3-4 hours before needing recharging...

Second is the actual WiFi ....any recommendations for reception on the road? Services that may reach out in forest camps etc..maybe a booster antenna??

Thanks for your knowledge,
J

Powering the Lappy.... two options... Either pickup a 12V for the Laptop (they sell universal ones that fit most laptops via power-tips that you can swap out). Though a better option would be to pickup and inverter (12v dc -> 120v Ac) that you can run your laptop off directly. 500W inverters can be picked up pretty cheap (less than $50 new) and are sufficient for most laptops. You will find many other uses for the inverter as well, such as running standard compact fluorescent lighting for your camp...Or to power some jams, etc.

For your internet.... I will say, that (though I am anti-cell phone in general).. A cellular PC Datacard is very useful for connectivity on the road. Of course will be worthless in the backcountry.

Before leaving my techie job (and tossing all my cell gadgets) I used a PC datcard to stay connected as I ventured around from state-to-state.. My employer oblivious to the fact that I was doing zipping down the highway, stopping occasionally to catchup on the biz-E, etc.

Anyhow. Between your Wi-fi card and a Cell PC data card you have many options for getting on the net. The only other solution would be to pack a Sat-dish...But aiming those for data is critical...and would only recommend that for a die-hard in need of much downband.

(feel free to ask more questions if more detail needed).

See ya on the road.... Still building my gypsy tinker wagon.

Hi, sorry about the long silence. ....been traveling.
went to San Diego in time to be evacuated for the fires and made my
way back to northern Nevada brrrrr.... but not too bad ;-)
In the end have relied on open signals and the library for internet

may stay put for awhile in my current spot and order up land line DSL at the friends house I am parked behind.

Still shopping though and I appreciate what others here have found
      Happy holidays !!!!!

Verizon offers a USB dongle that acts as a wireless service. True, it's $60/mo, but I had no problems with it in the middle of nowhere. The key part about that being that is has to be used in an area Verizon has coverage.

my friends on the mesa in taos tried verizon's cellular internet service and really hated it. It would constantly drop the signal. They use satellite now with much more reliability. Wild Blue sat thru the local ISP (Kit Carson Communications, I believe.)
